Given my whole website idea was based on the deadlift, I was super excited about the latest CrossFit Games Open 14.3 workout.  Here is what it was:

I’ve talked about this before, but I’m not a competitive CrossFit athlete, and I don’t think I will ever be (never say never, there is always the masters division).  I love running and at least for the foreseeable future all of my goals will be based around running.  That said, every once in a while one of these CrossFit Games Open workouts pops up and gets me all fired up and excited.  This one was it for me.

Since my dead lift 1 rep max is around 425 pounds,  I wasn’t worried about the weight at all.  It was just a matter of figuring out how to get as much work done in 8 minutes as I could.  I knew that I could at least make it to 315 pounds and I really wanted to get there bad.  The night before I thought about it way more than I probably should.  I found 2 songs that were exactly 4 minutes long, and listened to them over and over again thinking about where I needed to be when each song was half way through and where I should be when each song ended.  Crazy, right?  The night before on twitter Mike Bledsoe suggested relaxing music and Chris Moore suggested Pearl Jam.  I combined their advice and I’m convinced it worked.  Being relaxed and breathing is always important, but particularly so when competing.

Anyway, I flew right through the rounds of 135 and 185 both unbroken.  Then I broke the round of 225 up into sets of 10.  275 was a bit heavy after all that work so I was breaking those up into ones and threes for the most part.  I was right where I needed to be to get to the round of 315 pounds, and it felt good.  I had about 30 to 40 seconds left when I loaded the bar for 315.  I managed to eek out 2 reps at 315 pounds, and I’m convinced I should have attempted a third.  Maybe I’ll do it again in a few months. 🙂

That still puts me in 571st place right now in my region (Ha!), but who cares?  I’m happy with it, and that’s all that matters.
