That’s right.

It’s almost here. I can taste it. If you walk outside of your door, and tilt your head just right, you can take it in through the pores of your body. The morning dew on the fields of grass is nature’s way of sweating with anticipation. The wind shakes the leaves, as neither can contain their excitement. The sun sets a little bit earlier, signifying that the shop is closed, there is football to be watched.

Autumn is almost here. Fall. The most wonderful time of the year. This is the South, SEC country. This is what God created, and the rest was required to make it round, so the world could roll it’s eyes at the obnoxiousness of it’s fan base. There might be plenty of times when the South has reason to hang it’s head in shame, but let me be clear, football season ain’t one of ’em.

In the South, we have four distinct seasons:

  1. Football Season
  2. Bowl Season
  3. Pre-Season
  4. Hot

The seasons bring with it distinct changes which allow for periods of re-invention, attitude changes, adjustments, and new beginnings. There is nothing better than waking up in a different climate than that which you fell asleep and being reminded that things change, that you can change, that nothing stays the same.

I love fall. I love football season. I love anticipation. I love the rush of adrenaline that come with a new start, a new chapter, a new beginning, a new game, and a new season. I enjoy the feelings that swirl together when you mix potential success, with a possibility of failure, the chance of loss, and the opportunity for victory. I am blessed to live in a world that has geographically placed me in the climate, and the environment, that allows for me to rise and fall with the world around me, even if I am not always in sync.

Today, I can smell it. It all smells like gridiron, which reminds me of friends, that makes me think of holidays, which makes me think of family, who make me feel loved, which reminds me there’s a God, who reminds me that it’s all gonna be OK, which means three very clear truths:

  1. Autumn is coming
  2. There is a God
  3. God loves football.

Get excited. Wash your lucky gameday shirt. Dust off your Rotel dish. Change your batteries in the remote. Grease up your recliner. Trash talk your friend. Clean your grill. Get out your fat pants, over-sized jersey, and stupid looking hat. Get ready for some football.
