This was the conversation that took place on the way to school yesterday between my 10 year old son, Grayson and my 7 year old girl, Andie.
Andie: “Did you know that the sky is blue because of the reflection off of the ocean?”
Grayson: “I don’t think that’s true.”
Andie: “It IS true!”
Grayson: “I think you made that up.”
Andie: “Uh-uh”…[pauses momentarily] “You HAVE to believe me!”
Grayson: “Why?”
Andie: [Another pause] “Because I just tooted.”
As I continued driving down the street, I just couldn’t quite seem to muster the appropriate words. I wanted to laugh, or just look confused, or just scratch my head, or give some sort of profound lesson.
My response was this:
“That is as valid as 95% of the arguments for any one viewpoint that you will hear throughout your life.”
Be careful when engaging in arguments. Make sure you have a point worth making, and that the other person is mature enough to listen. Chances are, you will probably feel better and do more good by silently blowing a toot in their general direction.
Have a great day!
