It’s not really an adventure if you know what is going to happen.

Back in the day, they bit bullets. A bullet and some whiskey were the most comforting things that could be offered in many situations. Today, we have all the comfort in the world. We have pain medicine, knowledgeable doctors, excellent facilities, and information designed to keep us all as comfortable as possible.

As humans, we still have a longing to bite the bullet. There is a primal spirit inside all of us that sometimes wants for the comfort to be removed and to experience the pain that comes with every worthwhile accomplishment.

As early as twenty years ago, people did not have the access to information that we have today. If you wanted to climb a mountain, run a race, or swim a river you did not have the benefit of 10,000 race reports and email addresses of people to contact. At some point, you had to bite the bullet and just give it your best shot.

I don’t know what it means to be “Fully Prepared” for something, but I know what it’s like to try. I don’t think I have ever been 100% “Ready” for an adventure but I like the feeling of adrenaline that comes with the attempt.

If I base my ability to finish a 50mile race on what I feel like after I run 400meters, I will never sign up for an event. If I judge my ability to complete a task based on my willingness to bite the bullet and break a sweat, there is nothing I won’t try.

If I wait until I am fully-confident and 100% prepared, I will never be ready.

Sometimes, the best medicine available is simply biting the bullet.

One foot in front of the other.

Waddle-waddle.
