“Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
—The internet or Albert Einstein (not exactly sure)
“Donuts with dads” was yesterday at my children’s school. For whatever reason, I am a really bad donuts-with-dad-er. I have a great time with my kids and there is rarely any shortage of things to talk about. However, when I get into a forced environment, we all get awkward. We each just sorta stare at each other and waited for the time to pass. My son likes routine, and this was throwing him off. My daughter, well, she likes donuts, but she shoots from the hip like I do. Being forced into awkward conversation is not her thing either.
I think that donuts with dad is an excellent idea, and plays a very important role in strengthening relationships. All children need to feel supported and know that their parents support them, but I gotta tell you…I am totally out of my element.
I love to talk. Conversation is one of my favorite things. I actually think I am pretty good at it. However, when it involves “donuts with dads”, I tend to fall short.
I think that there are a lot of instances where you can be really good at something, but just not have the right environment. If you judged my ability to communicate with my children and be a nurturing and informative dad on my ability to interact during “donuts with dads”, I would be labeled as an unfit father, and that’s simply not the case.
So, before you decide that you are not good at something, or don’t excel in areas that you wish that you could, maybe try a new environment. Different atmospheres can have a profound effect on performance and how one’s strengths and talents are perceived. In a different crowd, with a different set of circumstances, and under a different set of lights you might shine a little brighter in the eyes of those you choose to surround yourself with.
They don’t keep the bar lights dim to save on the electric bill.
