In 2007, my hard drive crashed. I had nothing backed-up. My entire business had been lost. All of my files, all of my contacts, all of my information- lost.

I had to start over from scratch.

I learned my lesson; I bought a backup hard drive.

In 2009, my hard drive crashed again. I had nothing backed up. I formatted the backup drive incorrectly and had not been backing up any data. All my files and all my data were gone.

I had to start from scratch.

In 2011, my life crashed. Everything fell apart. I had lost all of my dignity, self-respect, all of my confidence. Everything was gone.

I had to start from scratch.

As it turns out, I only start from scratch once and that’s when I was born. Sure, rebuilding my files, my business, and my life was a daunting task, but I was not starting from scratch…I was starting where I left off but had to take a few steps backward to re-organize my files. The files were still there, somewhere, I just had to work hard to find them and get them back where they belong.

I like to believe that I have a degree of control in this world by gathering information and organizing it into neat little piles. The truth of the matter is that life is messy. Hard drives crash, files become corrupt, relationships crumble, possessions catch on fire, cars crash, and families apart. Within that is opportunity, the chance to take what I have already learned and decide what is worth putting back together and re-organizing and what is best to just leave behind.

Things get out of whack and chaotic, sometimes there is a retracing of the steps and pieces which need to be put back together… but I never start from scratch.
