Most anytime there is an option to get out and do things or sit on the recliner and watch tv, my choice is generally to sit at home. The older I get, the less I want to do. Fortunately, my wife is energetic and likes to do new stuff so she keeps me trying new things. I always enjoy trying new things, I just take some convincing. That’s not the case for my mom, though.

My mom will not turn down an adventure, assuming that it is legal (we are very different in this arena). She has been all over the world and experienced all sorts of crazy things. Her friend once told her,

“I have always wanted to go to Bhutan and can’t find anyone to go with me.”

My mom said,

“I will go with you!”

Her next question was, “Where is Bhutan?”

I think there is something to this. I believe that there is a connection between youthfulness and adventure. I don’t know if it necessarily makes you live longer but I believe it makes you live better.

Last week, my mom took me and Amanda to see Hamilton at The Orpheum. As we were waiting for the doors to open, my mom strikes up a conversation with the attendant- a seemingly nice older lady in her early 70’s. Somehow they got on the topic of travel and the lady said that she was going with a group to see The Passion Play in Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany. The next thing you know, the lady has invited my mom and they are talking price and logistics.

I looked at Amanda and mumbled,

“I swear to God, mom will do anything.”

Amanda replied,

“I know. I love it!”

The next day, around noon, I asked Amanda if she thought that mom had booked her trip halfway around the world with eight strangers that she had never met and Amanda’s response was an easy, “Yep.”

There is just something I about it that I have always admired. There is something about an adventure that goes in tandem with spontaneity that I feel is really good for the soul.

For anyone out there who is on the fence about an event, a race or any kind of adventure, I hope that you would use my mom as an example. Sometimes, what makes the adventure is having the details presented to you on a need to know basis. Besides, no one has ever died from an adventure, at least no one that lived to tell about it.
