I can’t follow instructions unless I understand what I am working with.

I do everything backwards. I build by process of elimination, meaning I eliminate all possible ways of incorrectly doing things by first doing them incorrectly.

Yes, I realize that instructions need to be read but until I get my hands on the materials and have some idea of what I am working with, I cannot process what the instructions are telling me to do. There are three kinds of people:

  1. Those who follow the instructions.
  2. Those who begin without the instructions.
  3. Those who never get past reading the instructions.

Reading instructions will help you figure out the things that can go wrong before they go wrong. Working without instructions will allow you to see what can go wrong as it goes wrong. Either way, things go wrong. It’s best to get busy working.

I think that is why I like trail running. The instructions are simple:

  1. Place one foot in front of the other.
  2. Wait for something to go wrong.
  3. When something goes wrong, eat something, drink something, wrap something, and revert back to step one.

What are you waiting for?
