What’s “your thing”?

I find it hard to get out of bed without “a thing”. I need something to be excited about. If I don’t have a new hobby, a bad idea, a skill, or some sort of adventure to look forward to, I am left with depression. The monotony of everyday life is too boring to bare and I can’t generate enough excitement to even get me from the bed to the shower, which is why a need “a thing”.

The “things” I choose to do are seldom lasting nor are they very productive, but they occupy time and keep me energized. I know a lot of people who are lacking that “thing”. They wake up with a spouse that annoys them, go to work at a job that bothers them, and come home to a television which pacifies them. They don’t have that “thing”.

I feel that many of us don’t have a “thing” because we feel that we must be good at it to do it. The truth of the matter is that I am “good” at almost none of the “things” that keep me excited about everyday life. Hell, if I was good at them then I would probably be bored by them.

I guess my point is that there is nothing wrong with deciding to have a spur of the moment hobby or interest. No one is holding you to pursuing it into a career or a grand stage. There is so much joy to be had in being really crappy at something and seeing the quick progress that comes with something new.

If I decide to start playing cello today, chances are I will make more progress as a cellist by the end of the day than Yo-Yo Ma will make by the end of the month. That is the beauty of starting something new and the degree of crappy that comes with trying all new things.

If your life is perfectly in place and has plenty of excitement, more power to you. However, if your life seems boring and drab then go buy a tennis racquet and call one of your fat, outta-shape friends to go play, start a blog, learn to code, join a gym, ride a bike, take a yoga class, or learn to quilt.

Fire the imagination and explore the things that make you feel good and be aware that we are supposed to be crappy at new things. Crappy is what makes progress so much fun.

Find your thing.

Induce excitement.
